The Scream by Edvard Munch is among the most iconic images of modern art. Of 4 versions of the painting, 2 have been stolen in major museum heists.

Six of these, including one that was hand-coloured by Munch, are in the museum today. The museum analyzed the handwriting and compared it to Munch's diaries and letters from the time. "The writing is without a doubt Munch's own," said Mai Britt Guleng, curator at the National Museum.

There were also two pastels produced. Even so, it was only after Munch’s death in 1944 that the popularity of the image really took off.
